“New Year New Me”. I’m sure we’ve all heard this phrase. A phrase of new beginnings, of a new season, of change. But why doesn’t the phrase read “New Year ‘Better’ Me” or “New Year ‘Still’ Me”?
While I understand that the idea of a fresh start is exciting (and sometimes Biblical), it seems that we are more drawn to the component of being made “new” instead of progress. While there are somethings that can be made new, the phrase “made new” was never an excuse to give up and start over sometime later when we feel like it.
So yes, start every day with a fresh start, but it’s ok to accept yourself too.
In today’s “thinks” I want to talk about self acceptance in the new year while continuing to chase your dreams.
Ring out the old ring in the new
Wait… I thought you said this was about accepting yourself.
While you should learn to accept yourself as you are, letting go of negativity can be one of the best things you do for yourself. Maybe it was something someone said to you in 2017 that ruined your confidence. It’s time to let go of the things you have no control over and pursue the things that you can change. Invest in positive things that will make you a better person and let go of any bitterness.
Forgive yourself if you make a mistake
The blessing and curse of life is that we will all make mistakes. While we should all own up to mistakes and be responsible for our actions, there will be times that you do not live up to your own expectations of yourself. If you’re anything like me, your first response is to feel like complete trash and wish you had never set goals in the first place. One minor step out of place and its the end of the world!
Learning that it’s ok to make mistakes allows us to learn from them and become better people. If we don’t create space for us to learn from our mistakes, we have only wasted our time and will most likely make the same mistakes again. Learn from your shortcomings and start over (There’s the start over part.) with a new understanding of what you want to accomplish. You got this!
Become the best version of yourself
Make sure that whatever goals you set for yourself are enough to push yourself but are also realistic. Don’t create your goals based on someone else reality. Although there is nothing wrong with having someone who inspires you, you are going to be your best living as who you were created to be. You are unique, gifted with specific talents and dreams. Those are the things you should strive to perfect. You are only given one life with a short amount of time to life it. Live it to the fullest and live it as yourself.
I hope this weeks “Thinks was an encouragement to you. These topics listed above are things that I am currently working on for myself. So don’t give up if everything doesn’t end up perfect all of the time. The key to success isn’t doing everything right all of the time, it’s consistency and learning from failure.
Thanks for reading! I’ll see you next week!
